BRYANSK, October 21 (Itar-Tass) — Nikolai Denin will be officially inaugurated as governor of the Bryansk region on Sunday after winning gubernatorial elections on October 14.

Two candidates ran for the governor’s post in the Bryansk region: Nikolai Denin, a candidate of the United Russia party, won 65.22 % of the votes, while Vadim Potomsky from the Communist Party of Russia finished second with 30.85% of the votes. The turnout stood at about 47% percent.

On October 5, the Bryansk regional court cancelled registration of Nikolai Denin as gubernatorial candidate on request from communist Vadim Potomsky who claimed that his rival’s signature sheets had been prepared with breaches. The regional election commission appealed to the Russian Supreme Court which revoked the regional court’s ruling enabling Denin to participate in elections.

The election situation in the Byransk region in the last days before October 14 had been tense. Mikhail Marchenko, a candidate from the Liberal Democratic Party of Russia (LDPR), withdrew his candidacy in favor of Nikolai Denin without waiting for the Supreme Court’s deicison. Andrei Ponomarev from the Yabloko party also stepped down in Denin’s favor. The Russian Supreme Court didn’t consider a new complaint made by Vyacheslav Rudnikov, a Just Russia party candidate.

Gubernatorial elections in the Bryansk region were given broad coverage in Russian media. A total of 40 people, including representatives of several federal media outlets and journalists from local newspapers and television and radio companies, worked at the local polling stations on the day of voting.

More than 10,000 people from various Russian regions followed gubernatorial elections in the Bryansk region via the Internet. The total number of visits exceeded 800,000.
