NOVO-OGAREVO, October 18 (Itar-Tass) — Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Thursday that he was categorically against allowing wearing hijabs in schools. However, he welcomed the idea of returning school uniforms.

“We need to see how our neighbors in European countries are tackling this problem (wearing of hijabs). Then everything will become clear,” President Putin said at a meeting with representatives of the Russian People’s Front.

“We should always respect people’s religious feelings but we should always proceed from the fact that we live in a secular state,” Putin explained.

Putin believes that regional and municipal authorities should think of re-introducing a single school uniform in schools. According to the president, apart from religious feelings of citizens, the school uniform will help solving everyday problems.

“People live differently, and it’s not very pleasant when some children come to school lavishly dressed while others, to put it mildly, are dressed modestly and feel themselves second-rate,” Putin explained.

He recalled some positive examples of some European countries which have a “good tradition” of introducing uniforms not only in separate schools but also in institutions of high learning.
