Russia expects Syrian opposition to support Geneva communique publicly

UNITED NATIONS, October 15 (Itar-Tass) — Russia expects the Syrian opposition to reaffirm its commitment to the Geneva communiqu·, which calls for a peaceful settlement in the country, after the upcoming meeting in Doha on October 17.

The Syrian authorities “have already supported the Geneva agreements publicly and appointed the negotiator,” Minister for National Reconciliation Ali Haidar Russian Permanent Representative to the United Nations Vitaly Churkin said at the U.N. Security Council on Monday, October 15.

“We expect similar steps from the opposition. We hope that they will follow after the upcoming meeting in Doha,” Churkin said.

A congress of the Syrian National Council, which brings mainly Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s opponents living abroad, will be held in the capital of Qatar on Wednesday, October 17.

The agreements reached by the Action Group for Syria (permanent members of the U.N. Security Council and countries of the region) at its meeting in Geneva on June 30 are believed to be the main tool for settling the conflict in the country.

They call for stopping the violence, giving free access to Syria for humanitarian organisations and mass media, and launching the mechanism of comprehensive political dialogue with the subsequent creation of an interim government.

Churkin said that the Geneva communique “remains relevant”. “We urge all reasonable sides to poll their efforts on the basis of this consensus towards the speediest settlement,” he said.

According to the diplomat, a “top priority task” facing the international community is to stop the bloodshed in Syria. Moscow pins hopes “on the mediating potential of the mission” of Joint Special Envoy of the United Nations and the League of Arab States for the Syrian Crisis, Lakhdar Brahimi, as well as on the “sincere and constructive engagement with regional and international players to look for ways to stop the bloodshed in Syria promptly and unconditionally”.
