MOSCOW, October 15 (Itar-Tass) — Russian Federal Security agents in Vologda on Monday detained a local resident with a criminal record who wanted to become a suicide bomber.
The 39-year-old man who had spent a total of 17 years in prison on charges of robbery, rape, hooliganism and murder served his last prison term in Russia’s northern Arkhangelsk region where he met another convict serving a sentence for terror-related crimes. The Vologda resident had been the follower of radical Islamic movements since 2009, a source at the Federal Security Service department for the Vologda region told Itar-Tass.
The man was detained on October 13. Federal security agents found an F-1 combat grenade, detonators, self-made explosive devices containing 200 grams of TNT and self-driving screws with destructive elements during a raid on the man’s apartment. Besides, investigators confiscated extremist religious literature and CDs with recordings of al-Quaeda ideologist Abu Yahya and neutralized militant Said Buryatsky.
Criminal proceedings have been launched on charges of illegal trade in arms, explosives and explosive devices.
The suspect was taken into custody.
The Federal Security Service department for the Vologda region doesn't rule out that new facts may appear in connection with the case. The suspect had planned to blow up a bomb in the territory of Vologda.
