Incumbent governor of Novgorod Region Mitin wins elections

VELIKY NOVGOROD, October 15 (Itar-Tass) —— Incumbent governor in the Novgorod Region Sergei Mitin, who represents the United Russia Party, has won the elections and will head the region again. According to the results of counting all ballot papers he gained 75.95% of votes, the regional election committee said.

His rivals - a candidate from the Patriots of Russia Party Nikolai Zakharov and LDPR candidate Viktor Mikhailov - gained 10.63% and 10.43% of votes, respectively.

The gubernatorial elections were held at 538 polling stations in 22 municipal districts in the region. Representatives of political parties, the regional Public Chamber and voters were monitoring the voting. The voters were monitoring the voting process in the Internet and in the online mode from a big screen, which was installed on the central square in Veliky Novgorod.

The Novgorod Region is one of the first regions, where after an interval of eight years the gubernatorial elections were held according to new rules with the signup lists of municipal deputies. According to the effective regional legislation the candidates were to gain the support of ten percent of deputies that is to collect 173 signatures of the heads of municipalities and municipal deputies (but not more than 181 signatures) to clear the municipal election hurdle.
