MAKHACHKALA, October 15 (Itar-Tass) —— A criminal case is opened over the attack against acting head of a department for investigating particularly serious cases Nurlan Ashurbekov in Dagestan.

The case is opened on charges of an attempt on an investigator's life and illegal possession of arms and ammunition, a source at the department where Ashurbekov works told Itar-Tass.

On Sunday at about 23:00 Moscow time, an unknown person in a white Lada Prior car opened fire on Ashurbekov's armored car in the city of Kaspiisk. The investigator, who was at the wheel, was wounded in the left arm. He was taken to hospital. The attackers escaped. Twenty six 7.62-mm and three 9-mm bullet cases were found at the site.

Ashurbekov heads a section for particularly serious cases at the Russian Investigative Committee's department in the republic. Connection with his investigative work is considered as the main version of the attack.

Department sources noted Ashurbekov's service investigated the double attack against the Alayska-30 traffic police post in Makhachkala. The two terrorist attacks killed 13 and injured 100 people. At present, Ashurbekov himself and his service investigate the murder of Sheikh Said Afandi Atsayev and six parishioners.
