ST. PETERSBURG, October 13 (Itar-Tass) —— Traffic policemen have detained the police officer who was at the wheel of the car that struck a pedestrian to death in St. Petersburg overnight.
The 28-year-old police official, Maj. Sergei Kudryavtsev, chief of the Petersburg Vsevolzhsky district criminal police department, was in a drunken state at the wheel, a source at the Petersburg city and Leningrad regional police department told Itar-Tass.
The accident occurred at about 03:30 Moscow time on Saturday at the crossing of Peredovikov Avenue and Irinovsky Avenue. The pedestrian was struck by the Honda Accord when he was crossing the road.
The man was running across the street at a place not within a pedestrian crossing zone.
Patrol policemen witnessed the accident. They blocked the car and detained the driver.
The medical test detected 1.2% alcohol in the driver's blood, a medium degree of alcohol intoxication.
The chief of the Russian Interior Ministry’s Main Department Maj. Gen. Sergei Umnov has ordered to dismiss Kudryavtsev and conduct a thorough inspection of the work of the Vsevolzhsky district police department's senior officials.
