BISHKEK, October 13 (Itar-Tass) —— Son of the former Kyrgyz president Maxim Bakiyev was arrested in Great Britain, the Kyrgyz presidential press service told Itar-Tass on Friday.

“In the morning on October 12 the British law enforcement agencies arrested Maxim Kurmanbekovich Bakiyev at the requests of Kyrgyzstan and the United States in London on the accusations for heinous crimes,” the press service reported. “Since Kyrgyzstan and Great Britain do not have a bilateral extradition agreement, Britain is considering the extradition of Maxim Bakiyev to the United States,” the press service said. Meanwhile, the press service pledged that the US legislation “envisages a long term in prison” for the accusations brought against the son of the former president.

During Kurmanbek Bakiyev’s rule in Kyrgyzstan his younger son Maxim was considered as a shadow prime minister in the republic, under control of which there were financial flows in the republic. He occupied the post of the head of the central agency for development of innovations and investments in Kyrgyzstan. On his homeland Maxim Bakiyev is accused of several heinous economic crimes, particularly corruption and money laundering. He fled the republic during the revolution in April 2010 that resulted in his father toppled from the post of the president.
