PARIS, October 11 (Itar-Tass) – UNESCO, the UN agency in charge of science, culture and education, has awarded Russian scientists for contribution to nanosciences and nanotechnologies.

The winners of the award are the President of the Kurchatov Nuclear Research Institute, Dr. Yevgeny Velikhov, the CEO of the company Tekhnosistema, Pyotr Luskinovich, and the corresponding member of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Dr. Vadim Shakhnov, who is chief of the electronic equipment department at the Nikolai Bauman University of Technologies.

Dr. Irina Bokova, UNESCO Director General who represents Bulgaria, said Thursday’s awarding ceremony was an important event in the life of the organization, as nanotechnologies are positioned today in the forefront of science and they play an ever growing role in the solution of problems, which humankind is faced with.

She reiterated that Russian scientists are playing a major role in the process, adding that the Nobel Prize winning physicist, Zhores Alfyorov won the UNESCO prize in 2010.

Awards for achievements in the field of nanoresearch and nanotechnologies were also awarded to German and American scientists. Noteworthy, the U.S. was represented by the Russian physicist, Dr. Vladimir Shalayev.

“As a branch of science, nanotechnology summarized the experience and achievements of all other disciplines,” Dr. Yevgeny Velikhov told Itar-Tass. “Science is reverting to its foundations, to the times when all of its branches were integrated into a single entity.”

He stressed the importance UNESCO’s efforts in this sphere.

The prize for contribution to nanosciences and nanotechnologies was instituted at the initiative of an international commission supervising the development of this issue for the encyclopedia of life support systems, which is being drafted under UNESCO’s guidance.
