Russia gives UNICEF time to wrap up projects until yearend

Such a decision has been taken, after Russia turned from a foreign aid receiver to a donor

MOSCOW, October 9 (Itar-Tass) — Russia gives the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) time to wrap up all remaining projects on its territory until December 31, 2012, the Foreign Ministry’s information department told Itar-Tass on Tuesday.

Such a decision has been taken, after Russia turned from a foreign aid receiver to a donor.

Back in 2009 the Russian side notified UNICEF of the need to gradually complete all projects, the source said.

Initially UNICEF was expected to end its programmes in 2011, but by that time the fund has several uncompleted projects, therefore this term was extended for 12 months.

Along with this the Russian Foreign Ministry noted that “the closure of the fund’s offices does not mean that cooperation will be stopped.”

Russia continues to actively develop cooperation with UNICEF on projects outside Russia, the ministry said.
