Sochi Olympic Torch Relay to pass via Kamchatka'sYelizovo

The itinerary of the Olympic Torch Relay will run across 83 constituent entities of the Russian Federation

PETROPAVLOVSK-KAMCHATSKY, October 8 (Itar-Tass) — The Kamchatka Territory (KT) is preparing to set up an organizing committee for arrangements to play host to the Sochi 2014 Olympic Torch Relay Race, the itinenary of which will run via the cities of Yelizovo and Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, a KT government press service official told Itar-Tass on Monday.

It was at a ceremony of the presentation of the Olympic Torch Relay route in Moscow on October 7 that Kamchatka learned that it would be among areas to play host to the Olympic Torch, which will stay on Kamchatka for two days, a KT governlment official said.

"Due to the Olympic Torch Relay we shall find ourselves at the center of the entire country's attention. We shall get a chance to demonstrate the region's assets, the traditions of culture and of our hospitality, to tell about outstanding people, break the existing stereotypes, and enable each person to feel (a certain) inclusiveness in the forthcoming 2014 Winter Olympic Games. We are confident that we shall be able to welcome the Olympic Torch Relay properly, at the highest level of excellence, and show high professionalism and concertednes in work," Valery Kirpenko, acting deputy chairman of the KT government, said in this connection.

The itinerary of the Olympic Torch Relay will run across 83 constituent entities of the Russian Federation. Ninety-five percent of the country's population, about 130 million people will find themselves in the environs of the Olympic Torch Relay which will last 123 days and will be not only the longest but also the largest-scale one in the history of Winter Olympic Games. The Olympic Torch will be carried by 14,000 torchbearers and more than 30,000 volunteers. The Olympic Torch Relay will cover a distance of over 65,000 kilometres.
