PETROPAVLOVSK-KAMCHATSKY, October 7 (Itar-Tass) — Russian President Vladimir Putin believes the jail sentence imposed on three members of female punk group Pussy Riot is fair.
“The court ruling was correct, they got what they wanted,” the president said in an interview with Central Television program on NTV television. The president also stressed that statements of the young women, who said that by their action they had voiced protest against the head of state and the patriarch, were not true.
According to the president, the expertise showed that “they later overdubbed (on the existing soundtrack) all that concerns the president, and in reality they shouted nothing of the kind in the cathedral”.
If this is so, Putin believes that it was the action chosen by the young women to attract additional attention and an attempt to prove that they had not simply “behaved like hooligans and fouled up in church”.
On August 17, Moscow’s Khamovniki district court sentenced the young women to two years in general penitentiary for hooliganism motivated by religious hatred for storming the altar of Christ the Savior Cathedral in multi-colored masks to sing a “punk prayer” to the Virgin Mary to “throw Putin out”.
