India successfully test-fires BrahMos supersonic missile

India’s Navy has successfully test-fired the 290-km range supersonic cruise missile BrahMos

NEW DELHI, October 7 (Itar-Tass) — India’s Navy has successfully test-fired the 290-km range supersonic cruise missile BrahMos, which was jointly developed and produced with Russia, a representative of BrahMos Aerospace, Pravin Pathak, told Itar-Tass on Sunday.

The cruise missile was test-fired from the guided missile frigate INS Teg that entered into service of India’s Navy last April.

The frigate was built at Russia’s Yantar Shipyard in Kaliningrad and was set afloat in November 2009.

Russia and India signed a 1.15 billion dollar contract for the construction of such three frigates in 2006. These ships with displacement of 4,035 tonnes are equiped with advanced weapons systems, including the BrahMos missile system.

BrahMos missiles are produced by BrahMos Aerospace, a joint venture of Russia and India.

The missile has already entered the service of India’s Army and Navy. The air launch version and the submarine launch version of the missile system are in progress and supersonic missile BrahMos should go into service soon.
