Power supply disrupted by storm resumes in Kaliningrad rgn

Nearly 40,000 were left without electricity by a storm that swept through Russia’s westernmost Kaliningrad region last night

KALININGRAD, October 6 (Itar-Tass) —— Repair teams have restored electricity supply disrupted by a storm in Russia’s westernmost Kaliningrad region.

“We are finishing reconnection of the remaining consumers to the power grid,” Yantarenergo power utility’s spokesperson said on Saturday, October 6.

The spokesperson for the regional office of the Emergencies Ministry, Alexei Baranov, told Itar-Tass on Saturday, October 6, that “repair teams have fixed problems on the 110 kilovolt power transmission line that supplies electricity to Kaliningrad’s suburbs and one of its districts”.

Social facilities, such as schools, hospitals and kindergartens that received electricity via emergency channels, are now returning to the regular mode.

“According to the latest data, there is no electricity in eight small settlements of the region with a population of 1,275 people,” Baranov said earlier.

Nearly 40,000 were left without electricity by a storm that swept through Russia’s westernmost Kaliningrad region last night.

As a result, 433 transformer substations in 83 settlements of 12 districts and Kaliningrad were de-energised. “A total of 39,249 people were left without electricity,” Yantarenergo said.

The company introduced a special regime of operation and engaged 41 repair teams of 120 people and 41 pieces of equipment and machinery to deal with the consequences of the storm.

The press service of the regional administration told Itar-Tass that two people were killed by the storm. One accident occurred on the highway between Kaliningrad and Baltiisk when a tree had fallen on a moving car, killing the driver.

The other accident happened in the settlement of Zelenodolskoye where a tree fell on a 20-year-old girl on a road, giving her fatal injuries.

The storm also felled several dozen large trees, complicating traffic in some sections of the roads.

Work is underway to clear the roadways and reopen them to traffic and deal with other consequences of the violent storm.
