Storm leaves almost 40,000 people without electricity in Kaliningrad region

The storm also felled several dozen large trees, complicating traffic in some sections of the roads

KALININGRAD, October 6 (Itar-Tass) —— Nearly 40,000 were left without electricity by a storm that swept through Russia’s westernmost Kaliningrad region last night.

As a result, 433 transformer substations in 83 settlements of 12 districts and Kaliningrad were de-energised. “A total of 39,249 people were left without electricity,” the Yantarenergo power utility’s press service told Itar-Tass on Saturday, October 6.

The company has introduced a special regime of operation and engaged 41 repair teams of 120 people and 41 pieces of equipment and machinery to deal with the consequences of the storm.

Power supply has been resumed to some of the consumers but 355 transformer substations remain unpowered.

The press service of the regional administration told Itar-Tass that two people have been killed by the storm. One accident occurred on the highway between Kaliningrad and Baltiisk when a tree had fallen on a moving car, killing the driver.

The other accident happened in the settlement of Zelenodolskoye where a tree fell on a 20-year-old girl on a road, giving her fatal injuries.

The storm also felled several dozen large trees, complicating traffic in some sections of the roads.

Work is underway to clear the roadways and reopen them to traffic.
