Secular scholars, theolologians hold conf workshop in Perm Thurs

The two-day conference will open with a plenary session and a roundtable meeting on the theme of "The Realities of Culture and Actuality of Self-Awareness"

PERM, October 4 (Itar-Tass) — The 7th Russian annual conference workshop of secular scholars and theologians on the theme of "The Problems of Russian Self-Awareness. Religious, Ethical and Legal Aspects of Culture" opens here on Thursday.

The Conference Workshop, along with Russian researchers, has drawn philosophers, cultural studies scholars, and theologians from Belgium and the United States.

An official in the regional government press service has pointed out that the Conference Workshop is an international and Federal scientific event dealing with topical problems concerning the revival of Russian spirituality and is held within the framework of a long-term scientific programme "Religion in the Changing Russia". The agenda of the Conference Workshop includes an analysis of the most topical and important religious, ethical and legal aspects of domestic culture.

The two-day conference will open with a plenary session and a roundtable meeting on the theme of "The Realities of Culture and Actuality of Self-Awareness". Those present are to discuss matters concerning the ethical and legal self-awareness of people in Russia, the problems of religion in the changing Russia, and take part in discussing the theme of "Russian Literature and Russian Self-Awareness".

"Experience has shown that such a discussion is essential for many and not only scholars and researchers. It is necessary for ordinary people as well," a source at the Perm State Institute of Art and Culture, which is the initiator and organizer of the conference, has told Itar-Tass.

"The conference is a dialogue which will help maintain tolerance in society and bolster up growing self-awareness and respect for the other cultures and religions," organizers believe.

The conference is held by this Perm Institute in conjunction with the Institute of Philosophy of the Russian Academy of Sciences, MGIMO University, the Higher School of Economics (Moscow), the Moscow Theological Academy, and the Perm Bishopric of the Russian Orthodox Church.
