PETROPAVLOVSK-KAMCHATSKY, October 4 (Itar-Tass) — Coast guards of Russia and the United States agreed to step up cooperation in ensuring security in the Pacific Ocean and the Bering Sea in 2013, exchange information and counteract illegal fishing.

Signatures under the cooperation plan were put by the chief of the Northeast border division of Russia’s Federal Security Service, Lt. Gen. Rafael Dayerbayev, and Commander of the 17th District of the United States Coast Guard, Rear Admiral Thomas Ostebo.

In 2012 the two countries’ coast guards detained ten non-compliant vessels and held 500 online conferences for coordination of actions and information exchange, a spokesman for the FSB’s Northeast border division, Andrei Orlov, told Itar-Tass.

The delegation of the U.S. Coast Guard’s 17th District completed its visit to the Kamchatka Peninsula leaving Petropavlovsk-Kamchatka for Chukotka in Russia’s Far East. Then it will return to its base in the Kodiak Island, the U.S. state of Alaska.
