RIGA, October 2 (Itar-Tass) — A special account has been opened in Latvia for those who want to contribute donations for the restoration of a monument to the legendary Russian rock star Viktor Tsoi who died in a car accident in Latvia on August 15, 1990. The collected funds will be used to replace the concrete and tile pedestal of the monument to a new one made solidly of stone.
The local media reported on Monday that the idea to raise funds for the restoration of Viktor Tsoi’s monument which was built on the place of his tragic death belongs to the Pareiza Lieta organization whose members initiated the construction of a monument to Viktor Tsoi in 2002. They include Amiran Khabelashvili, Ruslan Vereshchagin and Valery Petrov.
The monument underwent partial renovation in 2006. But annual cosmetic repairs cannot save the tiles from deterioration.
“The new stone pedestal will be more resistant to weather conditions. Besides, the renovated monument will get a new fencing and autonomous lights to illuminate the sculpture,” the initiative’s organizers say.
Viktor Tsoi died in Latvia on August 15, 1990. His car collided with a bus on the 35th kilometers of the Sloka-Talsi highway dozens of kilometers away from Riga.
