Russia, Iraq against external interference in Syria

Lavrov and Zebari stressed the importance of “political settlement of the Syrian crisis on the agreed-upon bases resting on international law”

MOSCOW, September 29 (Itar-Tass) —— Russia and Iraq spoke up against external interference in Syria’s internal affairs, the Foreign Ministry said after a meeting between Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and his Iraqi counterpart Hoshyar Zebari on the sidelines of the 67th session of the U.N. General Assembly on New York on Saturday, September 29.

When discussing the situation in Syria, Lavrov and Zebari stressed that “both sides have similar positions” and are against external interference in internal Syrian affairs.

They stressed the importance of “political settlement of the Syrian crisis on the agreed-upon bases resting on international law, including the final resolution of the Action Group’s meeting in Geneva”.

Lavrov “welcomed the efforts being taken by the Iraqi authorities to stabilise the situation in the country, restore Iraq’s positions in the international arena and get the remaining U.N. sanctions lifted”, the ministry said.
