Geneva communique can help UN/LAS envoy in Syria – Lavrov

“We are convinced that the Geneva communique will remain relevant,” he emphasised

UNITED NATIONS ORGANISATION, September 27 (Itar-Tass) — The Geneva communique remains in force and can help U.N./LAS Special Envoy Lakhdar Brahimi to resolve the Syrian crisis, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said at the U.N. Security Council session on Thursday.

The session is devoted to the Middle East.

“I have no doubts that the military scenario, moreover the armed intervention from outside, poses a serious threat to regional security and is fraught with unpredictable consequences,” the Russian minister said.

He stressed, “The settlement can be achieved only through talks and through a compromise by meeting the interests of all confessions and ethnic groups of the Syrian society.”

“There are grounds for this,” Lavrov said, adding that the Geneva communique of the Action Group had been approved in furtherance of U.N. Security Council Resolutions 2042 and 2043 and the Kofi Annan Plan of June 30. The communique recorded consensus between all permanent members of the U.N. Security Council, the League of Arab States, Turkey, the European Union and the U.N. Secretary General.

“We are convinced that the Geneva communique will remain relevant,” he emphasised.

“We hope that this document will help the U.N./LAS Special Envoy, Lakhdar Brahimi, and his team to search for ways and overcome the crisis. We will provide any support to him. We will laud other constructive proposals which are capable of stimulating coordinating actions of the international community in order to make the Syrian parties to cease violence and start talks,” Lavrov pointed out.
