United Russia supports Mitrofanov as head of Duma’s media committee

MOSCOW, September 24 (Itar-Tass) — The United Russia Party has supported the candidacy of Alexei Mitrofanov as head of the committee for mass media that is being set up at the State Duma lower house of parliament.

This decision was made at a session of the presidium of United Russia’s faction, one of participants in the session said. On September 17, Duma Speaker Sergei Naryshkin gave instructions to prepare necessary documents to form a new - 30th, Duma committee that will deal with issues connected with mass media means.

The Liberal Democratic faction has offered the candidacy of Alexei Mitrofanov to the post. Formally he is from A Just Russia Party faction, but he was barred from the faction’s activities after together with some other deputies he voted on May 8 for the candidacy of Dmitry Medvedev for Prime Minister in defiance of the faction leadership’s decision.

Earlier, Vice Speaker Andrei Vorobyov made it clear that Mitrofanov had all chances to head the new committee. “I can say that he is one of the main candidacies to be considered to that position,” he said earlier.
