Russia nominates Karen Shakhnazarov’s film for an Oscar

Fifty-seven Russian films that had been released from October 2011 to September 2012 were presented to the “Oscar” committee

MOSCOW, September 24 (Itar-Tass) — Russia has nominated “The White Tiger”, a film by Karen Shakhnazarov about the Great Patriotic War, for an Oscar in the best foreign film nomination. The decision was taken by the Russian committee for Oscar nominations last week.

Russian film director Vladimir Menshov, the chairman of the Russian “Oscar” committee, said the meeting had been nervous because each member defended tried to defend his own candidate. Menshov himslef is the director of an Oscar-winning film "Moscow Doesn’t Believe Tears”.

This year, the “Oscar” committee had many new members, inlcuding Oscar winners and nominees as well as producers and film directors.

Fifty-seven Russian films that had been released from October 2011 to September 2012 were presented to the “Oscar” committee. The shortlist included ten films.

The final list of Oscar nominees will be announced in the Unites States on January 15 next year. The award ceremony will take place on February 24.
