MINSK, September 24 (Itar-Tass) — On the strength of the results of Sunday's parliamentary elections in Belarus, 109 out of 110 deputies have been elected to the Chamber of Representatives of the National Assembly (parliament) of the republic, Lidia Yermoshina, head of Belarus Central Electoral Commission (CEC) told a nightly news conference early on Monday.
"So, the elections are valid. According to prelimianry data, 109 candidates have bene elected," Yermoshina said.
The CEC chief pointed out that elections had been held in one of electoral districts in Gomel Region on a non-alternative basis, with the candidate there failing to poll an absolute majority of votes. A repeat election is to be held there, she said.
According to CEC leadership, the overall turnout of voters all over the country was 74.3 percent. Constituents were most active in Vitebsk Region, with voter turnout there being 81.1 percent.
