Belarus parties revoking candidates to payback agitation funds

In the present election campaign every candidate could receive from the republic’s budget up to five million Belarusian roubles /about 590 dollars/

MINSK, September 23 (Itar-Tass) — Belarusian political parties, which revoked their candidates from the parliamentary elections, should reimburse the republic’s budget expenses allocated for agitation materials, Chairperson of the Belarusian Central Elections Commission /CEC/ Lidiya Yermoshina said on Sunday.

“Some candidates – they are not many – have used the right to receive money from the republic’s budget for production of leaflets and banners,” she said. “If a party has revoked its candidates, and did so without good reasons, it should reimburse the money, the candidate borrowed for production of leaflets and banners.”

“I believe that following the elections, we shall have suits to reimburse these expenses to the republic’s budget,” she said.

Belarus’ two opposing parties – the United Civil Party and the Belarusian People’s Front on September 15 decided to revoke their candidates from the elections. The CEC reports about 66 revoked candidates.

According to the current legislation, in the present election campaign every candidate could receive from the republic’s budget up to five million Belarusian roubles /about 590 dollars/ for production of banners.
