RF fulfills SC resolutns against Iran, objects to extra sanctions

Russia’s ambassador to the UN addressed the Security Council meeting devoted to the observance of sanctions imposed on Iran in connection with its nuclear program

UNITED NATIONS, September 20 (Itar-Tass) —— Russia fulfills all resolutions of the UN Security Council regarding Iran but it objects to imposing extra unilateral sanctions on it, Vitaly Churkin, the permanent representative of the Russian Federation to the United Nations, told the Security Council meeting on Thursday.

“Russia fulfills completely all the resolutions of the Security Council regarding Iran. At the same time, we are convinced that unilaterally imposed extra restrictions erode effectiveness of the sanctions regime and the collective nature and unity of actions of the international community toward settling the situation regarding Iran’s nuclear program,” he said. “In a number of cases, such restrictions have an exterritorial character, which is utterly unacceptable from the viewpoint of international law,” Churkin added.

Russia’s ambassador to the UN addressed the Security Council meeting devoted to the observance of sanctions imposed on Iran in connection with its nuclear program. The special committee headed by Colombia’s permanent representative to the United Nations Nestor Osorio monitors the sanctions’ observance by UN member-countries. Churkin acknowledged that the committee acted objectively and in a balanced way, within the framework of its mandate. This is how it should continue, he said.

The Russian diplomat added that the expert group monitoring the sanctions’ observance should act without bias, on a basis of independence, using only reliable sources and trustworthy information.

The UN Security Council more than once imposed sanctions on Tehran (the latest time in June 2010), as it ignored calls of the international community aimed at closer cooperation between the Islamic Republic of Iran and the International Atomic Energy Agency to resolve the existing problems and get certain that Iran’s nuclear program is entirely peaceful.
