Georgian TV channels show more footage of jail battering

Presentation of the videos on TV produced much public indignation and rank-and-file Georgians held a number of actions of protest during the day

TBILISI, September 19 (Itar-Tass) —— Georgian TV channel 9-Arkhi on Wednesday aired more footage that depicted the battering of an inmate in one of the country's jails.

This time, the act of manhandling was performed on a teenager.

The staff of the TV channel claim they received the footage from Brussels where a former guard of a jail in the town of Gldani, Vladimir Bedukadze is staying at present.

Somewhat earlier on the same night, this footage was aired by the Tbilisi-based Maestro channel.

Bedukadze said Wednesday he had filmed some of the beatings in the course of 2011 at the instruction of the jail director.

In the meantime, the Office of the Main Prosecutor said ten senior officials of the national penitentiaty system have been detained. Their list includes a deputy chief of the Department for Penitentiaries, the director of the Gldani jail and his deputy.

President Mikhail Saakashvili made a public promise to bring to account the persons guilty of outrages on the inmates.
