MOSCOW, September 18 (Itar-Tass) — Russia and the European Union declare for non-politicized humanitarian aid to the Syrian population, the Russian Foreign Ministry stated on Tuesday after the meeting of Gennady Gatilov, the Russian Deputy Foreign Minister, and Kristalina Georgieva, the European Commissioner for International Cooperation, Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Response.

The parties discussed topical questions and prospects of Russia - EU interaction in civil protection and emergency aid, as well as the humanitarian situation in Syria and in some African countries.

“They stressed the need for nonpartisan and non-politicized humanitarian aid to the crisis-stricken Syrian population, taking fully into account the fundamental humanitarian principles and coordinating role of the United Nations,” the ministry said.

Gatilov posted the other party on Russian humanitarian deliveries to Syria through bilateral channels and on financial support for this work by United Nations structures and the International Committee of the Red Cross. Georgieva, in her turn, expressed appreciation of Russia’s efforts to ease the humanitarian situation in Syria.

“The European commissioner also positively assessed the work of the Regional Center of the Russian Ministry for Emergency Situations in the city of Nis, Serbia, and confirmed determination for interaction with the center in overcoming the consequences of natural disasters in countries of the region,” the ministry noted.
