MOSCOW, September 17 (Itar-Tass) —— Russia is not drafting a resolution on Syria that would firm up the Geneva agreements because the West lacks political will to adopt it, Deputy Foreign Minister Gennady Gatilov said.

He recalled that the Geneva Communique had been adopted by consensus. “At some point we suggested formalising the Geneva agreements in the U.N. Security Council by adopting a short resolution, but our partners did not agree to that,” the diplomat said at a press briefing on Monday, September 17.

At the same time, the adoption of such a document would “create a proper political atmosphere and send a clear signal towards stopping violence and starting political dialogue,” Gatilov said.

“However, speaking truthfully, if such a draft is put on the table, out partners will not agree with it,” he added.

Gatilov stressed that a resolution can be drafted quickly. “Political will is what is important,” he said, adding, “We do not see such political will for the time being.”
