VLADIVOSTOK, September 17 (Itar-Tass) — Typhoon Sanba is expected to batter Primorsky (maritime) Territory (PT) within several hours on Monday, a press service official of the Territorial hydrometeo center told Itar-Tass.
The center of the typhoon is now off the Korean Peninsula's south and continues to move northward. The rainfall zone spreads over to a distance of more than 1,000 km from the typhoon's center. In the coming night it will be over the central part of the Korean Peninsula, and will reach the Vladivostok latitude in the morning of September 18. More than 50 fishing boats from South Korea, in particular, have already taken shelter in the gulfs of Russia's Pacific coast. The typhoon is expected to lash mainly against the southern areas of the Territory, including Vladivostok. Very heavy rains are forecast, with wind velocity at the coast mountin up to 23-28 metres per second.
On September 17-19, in view of the expected heavy raining, a steep rise in the level of water is predicted for most of PT rivers, with a possible underflooding of farmland, roads and bridges. In Oktyabrsky, Ussuri, Nadezhdinsky, Mikhailovsky, Chuguyevka, and Spassk districts, populated areas situated in the rivers' floodplains are expected to be underflooded as well.
A storm warning has been issued throughout the PT. All personnel and equipment of the Ministry for Emergencies have been put on a stand-by alert. Operations headquarters are at work in inhabited areas ready to eliminate the aftermath of the natural calamity.
