The An-28 plane belonging to a local airline left Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky on September 12 with fourteen people on board – twelve passengers and two crew members. Two of the passengers were children. The plane flew into a mountain ten kilometers away from the destination airport. Ten people, including the pilots and a four-year-old girl died instantly.

The four survivors – two men, one woman and a 13-year-old boy were at the tail of the plane. At the moment of the impact they were literally ejected from their seats.
