VLADIVOSTOK, September 10 (Itar-Tass) — President Vladimir Putin expects that the authorities of the Primorsky (maritime) Territory and Vladivostok will devote due attention to the development of Far Eastern Federal University (FEFU).
"I hope that both the regional and city authorities will render the necessary assistance to the University's development," the Head of State told a conference held at FEFU at the close of the APEC summit which had taken place on its campus. "Much more is yet to be accomplished than has been done so far. But you are on the right track," he said. "We shall bring into being a powerful intellectual center of Russia over here on theFEFU basis without fail," Putin pointed out.
The President recalled that it is planned to set up competence centers in six fields at the University: the world ocean resources, energy resources and energy-saving, the industry of nato-scale technologies and nanomaterials, a transport-and-logistics complex, economic and cultural internaction with Pacific Rim region, biology and biomedicine. The President also called for devoting special attention to the space research sector, for, in view of the construction of the spaceport Vostochny, demand for qualified specialists will also arise.
Putin recalled that the construction of FEFU new campus began only three years ago when only country roads were available at the site, whereas now the new campus has made it possible to host successfully one of major international gatherings.
The campus has taken up an area of 200 hectares. The area of premises in the 22 buildings is 948,000 square metres. Residential buildings of the University can accommodate 11,000 students at a time. The premises have been built with due regard for "non-barrier environement" requirements.
The overall number of students will be 53,600, with 30,000 of them being residence ones. It is planned that 3,400 teachers will work here and active work is under way to attract foreign specialists. Personnel will number almost 10,000.
Putin expressed hope that it would be comfortable for students and faculty members to work and study at the University. He pointed out that computers and multimedia equipqment had been purchased for the holding of the APEC summit. "It has been decided that a consderable part of the equipment and everything that can be used by students and faculty members will be left here as a gift to the Universty," Putin said, adding that the aggregate cost of the equipment will amount to about 1,000 million roubles.
Prior to the conference, Putin toured some University premises. The Head of State was told about modern computer systems which are being introduced at the FEFU. Under the "Electronic University" project, in particular, students and teachers will be able to use a whole network of databases on most diverse fields, including, for example, the verification of works from the viewpoint of plagiarism.
