VLADIVOSTOK, September 8 (Itar-Tass) —— The first working session of the APEC summit has opened on Saturday in Russia’s Far Eastern city of Vladivostok. The session was opened by Russian President Vladimir Putin as the host of the summit.
The Russian president welcomed leaders of the delegations from APEC member countries at the entrance to one of the building of the Far Eastern Federal University, which hosts the forum. Putin shook hands with each of them and exchanged a couple of words.
“The most important task is to pool efforts to counteract protectionism in all its manifestations, Putin said opening the first working session. Russia proposes to elaborate common regulations in this sphere, which will facilitate trade and investment liberalization, he said.
“The jubilee, the 20th summit meeting of the APEC leaders is being held in the new buildings of the Far Eastern Federal University and I am pleased that some of my colleagues have praised the venue,” Putin said. “When we finish our work, these buildings will be handed over to students.” The Russian president also expressed the hope that the renovated university “will be an educational centre not only for young Russians but will attract people from other Asia Pacific countries.”
“I invite you – official invitations will be sent later – to address students here to tell them about your vision of the development of cooperation in this region,” Putin said. “I am sure it would be interesting both for you and for young people who will study here.”
