Fire fighters liquidate fire at Volgodonsk NPP in 3 hours

VOLGOGRAD, September 7 (Itar-Tass) — It took fire fighters three hours to extinguish a fire at a power unit under construction at the Volgodonsk nuclear power plant in the Rostov Region. There have been no casualties. The Southern Regional Emergencies Centre told Itar-Tass that the fire alarm came at 01:10 MSK on Friday.

“The area of fire was at first 200 square metres, and then the fire spread to 350 square metres. There was no threat of the fire spread to the operating power units of the NPP. The extinguishing efforts were conducted with the use of a crane that was lifting a water tank with the capacity of 25 cubic metres. Water was dropped from the reservoir two times. At 03:36 MSK the open flame was liquidated, and at 04:12 MSK – the fire was completely extinguished,” the RF Emergencies Ministry said.

It noted that the causes of the fire are currently being investigated. A total of 42 people and 13 pieces of equipment were involved in the fire fighting efforts at the NPP.
