Pirates hijack Singapore-owned oil tanker

The Gulf of Guinea is one of the most dangerous areas in terms of piracy

PRETORIA, September 5 (Itar-Tass) — Pirates have steered to the open sea a Singapore-owned oil tanker they hijacked in the harbour of the Nigerian port of Lagos, the International Maritime Bureau (IMB) reported on Wednesday.

The incident occurred on Tuesday night. The crew of the vessel laden with fuel consists of 23 people. It is already the third case of seizure of seagoing ships by pirates in the Gulf of Guinea over the past two weeks.

In late August, the Energy Centurion tanker with 23 Russian sailors on board was seized near the coast of Togo. Pirates pumped part of petroleum products from the tanker and released the vessel. Nobody was hurt then.

The Gulf of Guinea is one of the most dangerous areas in terms of piracy. Only the waters near the coast of Somalia can equal it. According to the IMB 2011 report, these regions accounted for 63 percent of piracy cases.
