MOSCOW, September 4 (Itar-Tass) — The Museum of the Patriotic War of 1812 opens in Moscow as part of events to celebrate the 200th anniversary of Russia’s victory in the Patriotic War of 1812.
A two-storey exhibition pavilion was built in the inner yard of the former City Duma, where the Lenin Museum was situated earlier as well.
Initially the Moscow public planned to build the museum back early in the 20th century, to mark the 100th anniversary of Victory Over Napoleon. However, no special building was constructed for that, and the main part of collections went to the Historical Museum.
Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev said exhibits for the museum had been collected throughout the whole country. “Everybody who could took part in that, but the idea failed. And unveiling this museum nowadays, when we celebrate the 200th anniversary of our historic victory in the war of 1812, we restore that historical justice,” the prime minister stressed.
The prime minister also stressed that the Patriotic War of 1812 was the time when Russia was witnessing a colossal patriotic upsurge. The prime minister also thanked those who have taken part in creating the museum for their work.
