KRASNOYARSK, September 3 (Itar-Tass) — Russia’s famous tennis player Dinara Safina will become a special envoy to promote Krasnoyarsk in Eastern Siberia as a host city of the 2019 Winter Universiade, the press service of the region’s government told Itar-Tass on Monday.
“I accepted this proposal with pleasure, as after my visit to Krasnoyarsk I am confident that this city is a worthy host of the games of such a high level,” she said receiving such a proposal from the governor of the Krasnoyarsk Territory, Lev Kuznetsov.
“The hosting of the Universiade will open up new prospects for the city development – new buildings, dozens of thousands of athletes and visitors from all corners of the world, new opportunities for training future stars of the national and world sports,” she said.
Dinara Safina reached three Grand Slam finals and won a silver medal at the Beijing Olympics, gave a master class in a sports school for children in Krasnoyarsk.
The bid campaign to host the 2019 Winter and Summer Universiade started on September 1. Russia’s Siberian city expressed its intention to bid.
Moscow hosted the 1973 Summer Universiade. Kazan, the Republic of Tatarstan, will host the 2013 Summer Universiade.
Russia has never hosted the Winter World Student Games.
