Two militants killed in exchange of fire in Dagestan

None of police were wounded

MAKHACHKALA, September 3 (Itar-Tass) — In the Republic of Dagestan, on the Kavkaz (Caucasus) Federal Road near Komsomolskoye Village, Kizil-Yurt District, two members of illegal armed formations (IAF) were killed Sunday upon putting up an armed resistance to police.

A source at the SKR (Investigation Committee of Russia) department for Dagestan told Itar-Tass, "Police were trying to stop a VAZ-2109 car to check identity papers at the 726th kilometre of the Federal Road Kavkaz at about 21:20, Moscow time".

According to the SKR department, fires were shot from inside the car in reply to police actions. Police returned the fire and killed two people who were in the car. The identities of those killed have beee established. One of them, a certain Viktor Volkov, born in 1985, had been on the federal wanted list for involvement in IAF and banditry. Both militants were members of an armed gang operating in the Kizil-Yurt District of the republic.

None of police were wounded. A field investigation group has been at work at the scene of the incident.
