MOSCOW, August 31 (Itar-Tass) — Russia and China urge the soonest launch of a political process in Syria engaging the government and the opposition and based on UN Security Council resolutions, the Russian Foreign Ministry said on Friday in comment on a meeting of Russian Presidential Representative for the Middle East, Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov and Chinese Ambassador to Moscow Li Hui.
The Chinese diplomat requested the meeting.
The sides discussed key problems of the Middle East and North Africa with an emphasis on the situation inside and around Syria. “They stressed the need for the soonest end of violence in that country and the start of a political process engaging the Syrian government and the opposition and based on UN Security Council resolutions, the Kofi Annan plan and the Action Group’s Geneva Communique,” the ministry reported.
