Unilateral econ sanctions against Syria harm humanitarian situation - envoy

These sanctions, introduced in circumvention of the UN SC, have nothing to do with the real efforts to contribute to the Syrian crisis settlement

NEW YORK, August 31 (Itar-Tass) — Russia's permanent representative at the United Nations Vitaly Churkin said unilateral economic sanctions against Syria, introduced in circumvention of the UN Security Council, harm the humanitarian situation in the country.

The unilateral economics sanctions and restrictions introduced by several countries and regional associations harmfully affect the humanitarian situation in Syria, the Russian diplomat told a session of the UN SC session on Thursday.

These sanctions, introduced in circumvention of the UN SC, have nothing to do with the real efforts to contribute to the Syrian crisis settlement.

"They only make the life of ordinary citizens worse and lose them the opportunity to meet their basic needs and fully use the basic human rights," Vitaly Churkin underlined.

The Russian envoy called upon the states that had introduced sanctions against Syria to immediately lift them. The sanctions against Damascus were imposed by the USA, the EU and the Arab League.
