ST PETERSBURG, August 30 (Itar-Tass) — Opposition parties have filed an application to hold the March of Millions rally in St. Petersburg on September 15, a representative of the event’s organizing committee, Andrei Pivovarov, told Itar-Tass on Thursday.

The rally is expected to gather 10,000. The opposition proposed three different routes with the start point on Greek Square in St. Petersburg’s centre.

It will take three days to consider the application, Pivovarov said adding that the St. Petersburg city government’s reaction will be known next week.

The rally’s organizing committee includes the Republican Party of Russia – People’s Freedom Party (RPR-PARNAS), non-registered party The Other Russia and some other opposition parties. The regional office of Yabloko declined to join the event’s organizing committee over contradictions in the opposition’s ranks, a spokesman for the party office, Alexander Shurshev, said.

Meanwhile, on Wednesday the head of the St. Petersburg League of Voters, Tatyana Dorutina, announced the creation of an alternative committee for the March of Millions and the intention to file a similar application for organizing the rally to the city government.

The opposition from the first organizing committee plans to demand cessation of political repressions, direct governor elections and prevention of destruction of St. Petersburg’s historical centre.

It is expected that the opposition in Moscow will file an application to organize the March of Millions rally on Friday.
