RF first tablet computer introduced to Rogozin

The first Russian tablet computer is to go on sale in wide distribution and the entry-level tablet will cost 15,000 rubles

MOSCOW, August 30 (Itar-Tass) — The first Russian tablet computer, developed on the basis of the operating system (OS) Android, has been introduced to Vice-Premier Dmitry Rogozin.

The tablet is to be turned out towards the end of this year. The staff of the Russian Ministry of Defense are expected to be the main users. The tablet computer model will get the name of RoMOS. The operating system (protected by a Russian mobile one) will bear the same name.

Andrei Starikovsky, director general of a research and production cluster based on the National Research Nuclear University Techno Park, told Rogozin, "This operating system possesses all the functional resources of the Android OS but it does not contain silent-key functions of dispatch of personal data of users to the Google Company Head Office".

Starikovsky said deliveries of the computer to Defense Ministry would be organized with an eye to the possibility of using it in field conditions. He pointed out that the main functions of the tablet would be to cipher data, store crypto keys, maps of terrain and GLONASS navigation.

"There will be two designs of the tablet: standard and military ones (shock- and waterproof)," Starikovsky added. The development engineer pointed out that the tablet would be made by a Russian manufacturer. "Part of components will be imported but the assembly will be Russian on the basis of the Central Research Institute of Economics, Informatics, and Control Systems (Lead institute of the RF Defense Ministry). We excluded the Google market from assembly for security reasons," Starikovsky said.

In the process, the development engineer said, applications may be installed in the tablet through RoMOS own market.
