VLADIVOSTOK, August 27 (Itar-Tass) — A powerful typhoon that approaches Russia’s Primorye may once again raise river levels and cause new floods in the region, the head of the territorial meteorological service, Boris Kubai, told reporters on Monday.
“Decrease in the water level in local rivers that begins to show may stop and water may rise up to one meter in some areas. We are also concerned in connection with possible heavy rains in the neighboring of province Heilongjiang to which the Razdolnaya River may react,” he added.
According to meteorologists, Typhoon Bolaven approached early on Monday the southern section of the Yellow Sea. “We have a possibility nowadays to calculate the trajectory of the typhoon basing on up-to-date forecast models designed in Russia, Japan, the United States, Great Britain and Germany,” Kubai said adding that according to all these models the typhoon will be moving over northeastern Chinese provinces towards Khabarovsk.
Moderate or heavy rains are expected in Primorye. “The most unpleasant thing we may get is gale-force or even hurricane winds in Vladivostok,” he said. In this situation one can expect uprooted trees and billboards as well as collapsed ramshackle buildings, he added.
Typhoon Bolaven is expected in the region overnight to Wednesday and on Wednesday. A storm warning has been issued. Weather conditions will begin improving in the south of Russia’s Far East only on Thursday.
