VLADIVOSTOK, August 27 (Itar-Tass) – Situation with river floods in the Primorsky /Maritime/ territory is stabilizing and water levels are subsiding at most rivers, the press service of the territorial division of Russia’s Ministry for Emergency Situations and Civil Defense /EMERCOM/ said Thursday.
Water has fully receded from towns and villages and only a section of a local road in the Kirov district remains flooded. Access for cars to the area has been restricted provisionally.
Water in the rivers in central districts of the Primorsky territory overspelt the banks and inunda5ted almost 300 households in dozens of townships and villages, also damaging roads and automobile bridges along the way.
Rapid response groups have been dispatched to the affected areas. They include officials from local municipalities and EMERCOM representatives.
Almost twelve groups of specialists are assessing the damage sustained by various districts as a result of the calamity.
The specialists have already visited about 1,600 households at the moment.
In the meantime, the horrendous typhoon Bolaven is moving towards the Primorsky territory, although officials say its impact will be tentative.
Weather will worsen by overnight to Tuesday. Rains that will likely begin Tuesday morning will then spread to all other parts of the territory.
Winds will gain more speed in Vladivostok and will be blowing at 18 to 23 meters per second.
Rainfall will stop in the middle of the week.
Last preparations are underway in the Primorsky territory and in Vladivostok for hosting a summit conference of the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation forum, due to convene here from September 7 through to September 11.”
The APEC summit conference will be held on the newly built compound of the Far-Eastern Federal University. The organizers of the event expect that the official delegations from about twenty Asian and Pacific countries will attend the forum.
All in all, the authorities expect to host about 10,000 guests in connection with the summit.
