BEIRUT, August 26 (Itar-Tass) —— The people of Syria would not allow the hostile conspiracy masters to reach their goals, no matter what price they might have to pay for that, Syrian President Bashar al-Asad told Iranian Parliament’s National Security and Foreign Policy Committee Chairman Alaeddin Boroujerdi in Damascus on Sunday.
In his words, the Syrian events presented a threat to the entire region. This conspiracy targets at Syria, which is a cornerstone of the Middle East, the president said.
Boroujerdi noted that Iran supported the Syrian government and people and was holding consultations with its brothers in Damascus on the initiatives it had and would put forth on international and regional levels. He described Syrian security as a part of national security of Iran.
The parliamentarian informed the Syrian administration about the initiative Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad plans to present at a summit of the Non-Aligned States on August 30-31.
The SANA Syrian news agency said Boroujerdi held negotiations with Syrian Vice-President Farouk Al-Shara, who appeared in public for the first time since Arabic television channels claimed his flight to Jordan.
Syrian Foreign Minister Walid Al-Mualem set two conditions for starting a dialog with the opposition at the Sunday meeting with Boroujerdi.
The Syrian opposition must stop fighting and say ‘no’ to external interference in internal affairs of the country before the dialog with the authorities starts, he said.
Mualem said the negotiations could start only Syria had rid of terrorist gangs. In turn, who keeps contact with opposition factions said that Iran had an objective view of the Syrian events.
Early this month the Iranians expressed their readiness to receive delegations of the Syrian government and the opposition in Tehran for elaborating a political deal towards settling the crisis and restoring national accord. Iranian Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi said the inter-Syrian dialog was bound to form a national unity government. He said nothing about the role Syrian President Bashar al-Asad might play.
