BISHKEK, August 24 (Itar-Tass) —— Kyrgyzstan recalls its ambassador from Belarus for consultations, the Kyrgyz Foreign Ministry told Itar-Tass on Friday.
“The measure is taken because of the absence of a Belarusian reaction to the oral protest of August 21 and the Foreign Ministry statement of August 22 with regard to the stay of our citizen Zhanybek Bakiyev on the territory of Belarus,” it said. “Zhanybek Bakiyev, a brother of ex-President Kurmanbek Bakiyev, is wanted by the republican police and the Interpol for felonies.”
Several days ago Bishkek demanded that the Belarusian authorities must detain the brother of the ex-Kyrgyz president and extradite him to the home country. Minsk said Zhanybek Bakiyev was being persecuted for political motives and rejected the demand.
Kyrgyzstan made a new statement. Zhanybek Bakiyev is suspected of orders to open fire at the opposition on April 7, 2010. Eighty-seven people died and hundreds were wounded in the incident. He is also suspected of engagement in the murder of ex-head of the Presidential Administration Medet Sadyrkulov. Zhanybek Bakiyev was the head of the State Security Service when his brother held the presidential position.
