Court to pronounce sentence for Pussy Riot members

They may face of up to seven years in prison

MOSCOW, August 17 (Itar-Tass) — Moscow’s Khamovnichesky Court on Friday will pronounce a sentence for the three members of the Pussy Riot punk group.

Mariya Alyokhina, Nadezhda Tolokonnikova and Yekaterina Samutsevich are accused of hooliganism after staging a ‘punk prayer’ in the Cathedral of Christ the Savior on February 21.

They may face of up to seven years in prison.

The prosecutor asked the court for sentencing the defendants to three years in prison. The lawyers insist on their full acquittal, saying their actions can be considered an insult to religious feelings that can be fined up to 1,000 roubles under the effective legislation.

The girls denied the charges brought against saying that their ‘punk prayer’ had no motives of religious hatred and enmity against Orthodox believers. They insisted their actions were purely political and had no religious subtext.
