FIDE suggests holding 2016 World Chess Olympiad in Baku

For his part, Ilkham Aliev welcomed Ilyumzhinov’s proposal on hosting the 2016 World Chess Olympiad in Baku

BAKU, August 15 (Itar-Tass) — Kirsan Ilyumzhinov, the president of the International Chess Federation, suggested holding the 2016 World Chess Olympiad at a meeting with Azeri President Ilkham Aliev in Baku on Wednesday.

Ilyumzhinov said that Azerbaijan was paying special attention to chess. “Out of 177 FIDE member countries, Azerbaijan is the only country to have a special state program for developing this kind of sport. It’s necessary that it should be implemented,” Ilyumzhinov went on to say.

For his part, Ilkham Aliev welcomed Ilyumzhinov’s proposal on hosting the 2016 World Chess Olympiad in Baku. He expressed the hope for expanding cooperation between FIDE and the competent bodies in Azerbaijan.
