BAKU, August 15 (Itar-Tass) — Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev received International Chess Federation (FIDE) President Kirsan Ilyumzhinov on Wednesday, August 15.
According to the state-owned news agency AzerTAc, Ilyumzhinov noted rapid development of the country since his first visit to Azerbaijan in 1993 and his meeting with national leader Heydar Aliyev.
“Stressing the successful cooperation between FIDE and relevant bodies of Azerbaijan, Mr. Ilyumzhinov said that Azerbaijan was the first among 177 members of FIDE to adopt a special state programme on the development of chess in the country,” the news agency said.
Ilyumzhinov reiterated FIDE’s proposal that Baku play host to the 2016 World Chess Olympiad.
Aliyev spoke of the successful performance of Azerbaijani chess players at various international competitions and stressed the importance of developing all kinds of sports, as well as chess, in the country.
He welcomed the FIDE’s proposal to hold the 2016 World Chess Olympiad in Baku.
Aliyev expressed hope for further broadening and deepening of cooperation between Azerbaijan’s relevant bodies and FIDE, AzerTAc reported.
