TBILISI, August 14 (Itar-Tass) — Five Italian mountaineers were rescued from a stone slide zone in the Georgian Mestia district bordering on Russia, the district rescue service told reporters.
The three Italians – three men and two women – were evacuated by helicopter. It would have taken rescuers long to walk there, and the Italians kept sending SOS signals. The mountaineers were transported to the district administrative center, Mestia.
Besides, the district rescuers evacuated an Armenian climber from Mount Ushba, 4,700 meters above the sea level. The mountaineer, who climbed the mount alone, stopped at the altitude of 4,500 meters several days ago, but thick fog prevented a Georgian rescue helicopter from reaching him. So he had to walk down by almost 1,000 meters before the evacuation became possible. The climber and Georgian rescuers took the evacuation helicopter on Tuesday.
