15 candidates to vie for 225 seats in Ukraine’s parliament under majority voting system

KIEV, August 14 (Itar-Tass) — Ukraine’s Central Election Commission has accepted registration documents from 3,432 people who want to run for seats in the Verkhovna Rada, or national parliament, in majority constituencies, the press service of the Central Election Commission said on Tuesday.

According to the Central Election Commission, a total of 1,717 of them were nominated by political parties, and 1,715 are self-nominees. Thus, as many as 15 candidates will vie for each of the 225 seats in the 450-seat parliament under the majority voting system.

August 13 was the last day for parliamentary candidates to submit documents to the Central Election Commission. The Central Election Commission has five days either to register them or deny registration.

The parliamentary election campaign in Ukraine started on July 30. Registration of candidates ends on August 20. Elections will be held on October 28.

Elections to Ukraine’s Verkhovna Rada are held under a mixed system. Half of lawmakers (225) are elected by party tickets and the rest 225 – in one-seat constituencies.
